The world is on the threshold of a new era of artificial intelligence (AI). Education and research should play a crucial role in shaping the future of this technology and of our society. As AI increasingly affects our daily lives, from self-driving cars to healthcare and finance, it is more important than ever to make sure the technology is developed and used responsibly and ethically. That requires both understanding of and skill with AI tools.

AI should be included in curricula as soon as possible.

Education and research

Education plays a key role here. For example, by training students in the skills and knowledge needed to develop and manage AI. That means teaching not only technical skills, such as programming languages and algorithms, but also ethical considerations and responsibility. By passing these values on to future AI developers, we can make sure AI is used for the common good and not purely for profit.

Research matters just as much. By continuously researching the applications of AI, we can better understand and address its risks and challenges. This includes research into privacy protection and securing AI systems against cyberattacks. Research into the long-term effects of AI on society is also needed. How can we make sure AI has a positive impact and does not come at the expense of jobs and human dignity?

AI is not neutral

Why does it matter that education and research shape the future of AI? To begin with, AI is not a neutral technology. Like any other technology, AI is developed and used by people and therefore reflects certain values and priorities. If we do not steer AI’s development proactively, there is a real chance the technology will be used in the wrong way, with intentions that are not always pure. That is why we must focus on creating a future in which AI makes a positive contribution to society and its individual members. That calls for, and even requires, proactive steering with a vision.

Build a responsible future

Education and research should therefore work together to guide the rise of AI in the right direction. It is time to act. Teach yourself AI, or get advice, and make sure you and your organisation are ready in time. Invest in education and research, put AI at the top of your priority list, and build that responsible future.
